Basque Nation Towns Tale
I. Within the Dawn of your time
When the ice ages receded and the initial human groups roamed the humid valleys in the Cantabrian Sea, the lands we now simply call Euskal Herria were being now a refuge. During the caves of Santimamiñe, Ekain, Isturitz, and Aitzbitarte, nameless arms remaining bison, horses, and symbols that also appear to resonate nowadays.
They have been hunter-gatherer peoples, adapted to rugged mountains, swift rivers, and coasts rich in fish.
Over millennia, these groups settled, cultivated the land, lifted livestock, and fashioned communities that, While assorted, shared cultural attributes that could outlast total empires.
II. The Vascones, Caristii, Varduli, and Autrigones
Over the Iron Age, Roman chroniclers described many peoples:
• Vascones in Navarre and elements of Gipuzkoa as well as the French Basque Nation (Iparralde)
• Caristii in Biscay and Álava
• Varduli in Gipuzkoa
• Autrigones in western Biscay
These weren't centralized kingdoms, but somewhat tribal confederations. They practiced livestock farming, transhumant herding, and Atlantic trade.
Rome arrived, but under no circumstances entirely subdued them. The mountains, forests, and local resistance intended that Romanization was minimal: roads, bridges, agricultural villas… but the language and a lot of customs ongoing on their own route.
III. Amongst Empires: The Early Middle Ages
Once the drop of Rome, these lands lay between two worlds: the Frankish as well as Visigothic.
Through this time, a name emerged that could resonate for centuries: Vasconia.
• In Navarre, the Vascones organized by themselves close to Pamplona.
• In the Northern Basque Place (Iparralde), the Duchy of Vasconia stretched with the Garonne River for the Pyrenees.
• In Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava, local lineages preserved autonomy amidst the mountains and valleys.
The Vikings attacked the coast; the Franks tried to control the Pyrenean passes; the Visigoths and afterwards the Muslims clashed within the Ebro frontier.
Nevertheless the Basque communities survived, adapting without having getting rid of their identity.
IV. The Kingdom of Pamplona / Kingdom of Navarre
From the 9th century, the Kingdom of Pamplona was born, which might later turn into the Kingdom of Navarre.
For hundreds of years, it was a critical player in peninsular and European politics.
• Navarre was the middle of ability.
• Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, and Álava had been associated with the kingdom at various moments.
